/ -> SI for a SysAdmin in 2026

AI or SI ?, I guess is the new term, is a huge time-saver. Some people really seem to hate it, but I'm a fan.

It makes my job easier. I can type what I want to know into a free or cheap AI and get a reasonable starting point in just a moment. I can hand it some code and it correctly evaluates it.

Granted, I work in technology, and AI was trained really well on most things I work with - windows, linux, python, bash, any other coding, etc.

This works for me because I know what I'm doing, more or less, most of the time, so I can quickly evaluate the AI response and determine if it is leading me down the wrong path, or hallucinating. And it does hallucinate.

When I get deep into a specific project or integration, or multiple constituent software question, I am usually better off just reading the documentation. AI will gladly answer ANY question. I don't use AI/SI for my email or give it access to anything else sensitive.

I would definitely recommend using AI for TRAINING new programmers and system administrators. They need to be told not to ask it for solutions to problems that THEY don't understand. AI/SI can definitely assist with understanding, and figuring out what to do next to solve software problems, but it isn't a replacement for learning.

Part of the problem is that AI NEVER seems UNSURE of it's own response, even if you don't phrase the question correctly. Be careful!
